Empathy, today’s Superpower

It’s been some time since I’ve posted on my blog. The world is changing drastically in such a short period of time and not everyone has the strength and capability to change as quickly.

I’ve been taking more time to self reflect on what is currently going on and how people are reacting to this. It is never easy admitting that you aren’t familiar or knowledgeable about topics but why not take the time to find out, educate yourself, then talk about it with others in a non-confrontational way? Everyone will have different opinions but being able to add knowledge from different reliable sources to hold constructive conversations is eye-opening and necessary during this crazy time.

I’ve always been the type to be there for my friends and family no matter what. I try to put myself in their shoes to feel and understand how they feel, but it isn’t easy. This is empathy, not just sympathy. Feeling empathy is sometimes hard as it takes strength and courage to feel other people’s feelings on top of your own. Empathy helps us understand and support one another better which is something this world needs right now more than ever. I want to feel what you feel so I can understand better.

I have a friend that left me a comment saying that she is scared to do everyday things or activities that make her feel good, such as running, shopping, and driving, with fear of being followed or worse killed. She is scared for not just herself but her kids, relatives, and friends. I wanted to put myself in her shoes and feel what she feels so I went for a run, kept turning around during my 2 mile run to see who was behind me, if I was being followed, and my surroundings. This gave me anxiety and made me think of how I have never felt the need to do this ever, only to make sure I was looking forward to not get hit by a car. I felt for her and cried after this run. No one should ever feel this way and I will continue to speak up, feel empathic towards everyone I meet, and continue to use my power to implement change that is long past due.

I have family and friends that are all going through trying times right now. This year has been the hardest most challenging year yet for me, but I keep thinking, it can’t get any worse, right? I haven’t been myself in about 6 months now as things just hit the fan over and over again to the point where it got depressing. I’m lucky to be alive, have the ambition and drive to keep going no matter what. I’m appreciating the simple yet important things in life, as it is a gift that is not promised.

Please try to feel empathic towards everyone you come across daily. You do not know the battles that people are going through and we all just need to be kinder to humankind.
